Avoid using the 2.5" hdd's(Laptop hard drives which are USB powered) if you're not intending to move hdd's around a lot because they aren't as reliable as the 3.5" (the ones that are significantly larger and require an external power supply).

I am looking at getting an external HDD, as my laptop HDD is fast filling up :S. I don't have a whole lot of experience when it comes to external HDD's, so is that a sort of hard-and-fast rule? I like the sound of 3.5"s, being more reliable (and cheaper ), but i would be transporting it a bit. Not a ridiculous amount, but sort of take it to mates places and to uni occasionally to do some file swapping/ transferring.. Also, if I wanted to have, say, a total of 1TB storage, would a single drive or two 500GB drives be better? and would there be a huge difference in price? This is talking in terms of buying an enclosure then whack a HDD in it...

Depending on where you get a 3.5", the 1TB is, by a tiny bit, cheaper than the 750GB.
Getting two 500GB's (minus case) as opposed to a 1TB is more expensive but not by a lot. About $15-$30.
The ones that come with an external case (usually more reliable) have a larger price gap, around $50.
There's a site called staticice if you want to look up more price comparisons.
I dont see the point in having two 500GBs. Using two is a bit of a hassle unless you're paranoid about backups.
Also when moving around, remember you need a power socket and carry around power adapter to power the 3.5" drive =P.

I go with Western Digital OR Maxtor, but the Maxtor one I've got came with it's own enclosure.
The good thing about the Maxtor one is that after a while, the drive goes into idle mode and the rpm slows down, reducing wear on the drive.
Western Digital, from my experience, have been extremely reliable.
Seagate is pretty shit imo. Heard too many failures from them.

copy this into a .txt file and then rename it .bat:
